The Interview That Led To Finding The Dream Job!

Whilst Surefire were recruiting for an RL Oposition to work on a project in Nottingham,we were sent Basmera’s CV from Abigail on the employment team at Nottingham City Homes and we were given Basemera’s details as a possible candidate.

Jen Ridgway at Surefire interviewed Basemera for the RLO position; this is what Jen said. “During the interview it was clear that her skillset lay within the construction industry, specifically plumbing. When I asked about her plumbing course and experience in that area, Basemera’s face lit up, I could tell that was her passion. Basemera was so enthusiastic and eager to learn, I knew she would do well. Following a discussion with Simon, our site manager, he arranged an interview with our contractor for a plumbing position, in which she was successful. I’m so happy we were apart of her journey to her dream job! Well done Basemera!”

Below is a bit of background from Basemera herself:

My father and family members work in construction and have always been supportive with my dreams and aspirations to work in this area. When I was at school I did engineering and product design GCSEs. I then went to Nottingham College, Basford Hall to study Level 1 Plumbing, Level 2 Maintenance and Level 2 Plumbing. I completed my courses at the end of June 2021.

I started to look around, to find a job, as my aim was to get a job either in construction generally or as a plumber. I came across Women in Construction, from going to Nottingham City Homes and got in touch with Abigail Greenwood who works in the Employability Team. I heard about WiC and the activities that it does. I was invited to a WiC Taster, however due to COVID it did not take place, however I continued to stay in touch.

Matthew Cuddy (Senior Site Manager)

Basemera has fitted in with our workforce extremely well. She gets along with everyone and is very confident in all the work she carries out. Since Bas joined us, she has gained many useful skills and utilises them in her day to day tasks very logically. She is proving herself extremely useful in our enabling and finishing side of the project and I think she will grow into a very valid member of any team and will thrive in a number of situations.

Alan Symms (Site Manager)

She is a good person to be with on site. A good team member.

We also had chance to catch up Basemera herself to see how life as a plumber was going:

“I’m enjoying the role; I am doing some plumbing but also learning other elements of site work, which I’m liking a lot. It’s a great team that I work with, they are open and honest and show me when I have done things well and not so well, so that I’m always learning. Working and meeting new people is also a great experience. I was completely overwhelmed when offered the position, didn’t expect it at all and had almost given up hope of finding my dream role. I’m grateful for the opportunity; it has been really good for me.”
